A few months ago I wrote about why American food may be quietly hurting our fertility — the ultra-processed diet, the regulatory gap between the US and Europe, the strange feeling that something in the background was working against us. Consider this part two. Because once you start pulling the thread on fertility, you land on a bigger, quieter subject that touches nearly everyone: the everyday chemicals that interfere with our hormones. Not just for people trying to have babies — for all of us, every day.
They have an unlovely name: endocrine-disrupting chemicals, or EDCs. And the more time I spent with the research, the more I realised the honest story is neither “everything is poison” nor “it’s all fine.” It’s somewhere more interesting in between — and, thankfully, more within our control than the scary headlines suggest.
First, What Is an Endocrine Disruptor?
Your endocrine system is the body’s messaging service. Glands release hormones — estrogen, testosterone, thyroid hormone, insulin, cortisol — and those hormones travel through the blood telling cells what to do and when. It runs on almost impossibly small amounts; hormones work at concentrations you’d measure in parts per billion. That exquisite sensitivity is exactly what makes the system easy to jam.
An endocrine disruptor is any outside chemical that interferes with that messaging. It might mimic a hormone and switch on a signal that should have stayed off, block a real hormone from docking where it belongs, or change how much of a hormone your body makes or clears. Because the system is so finely tuned, even a faint, badly-timed nudge can matter — which is why researchers pay special attention to windows like pregnancy, infancy and puberty, when the body is following hormonal instructions to build itself.
The Usual Suspects
You don’t need to memorise a chemistry syllabus. A handful of families come up again and again, and knowing their names makes them easier to sidestep.
Where They Actually Hide
Here’s the part that reframed things for me: the biggest exposures aren’t exotic. They’re the beige, ordinary objects we handle without thinking.
- Plastic food storage and water bottles — especially when heated. Microwaving leftovers in plastic, or leaving a bottle in a hot car, coaxes more chemical migration into the food.
- Canned foods, where the interior lining is a common source of bisphenols.
- Thermal-paper receipts, which are often coated in loose BPA or BPS that transfers straight onto your fingers.
- Non-stick cookware and grease-proof takeout packaging, sources of PFAS.
- Synthetic fragrance — perfume, scented candles, plug-ins, “fresh linen” anything — a frequent hiding place for phthalates.
- Personal-care products: lotions, cosmetics and shampoos carrying parabens and phthalates.
- Tap water, which can carry pesticide residues, PFAS and other contaminants depending on where you live.
- Household dust, the unglamorous reservoir where a lot of this quietly settles — which is why crawling babies and toddlers get a bigger share.
We’re not being poisoned by one dramatic villain. We’re being dusted, daily, by a hundred small ones — and the fix is a hundred small corrections, not a single act of purity.
What They May Be Doing to Our Hormones
This is where care matters most, so I’ll be precise. The strongest evidence is a web of associations — consistent enough that major scientific bodies take it seriously, but not the same as proof that a given exposure caused a given person’s condition.
- Thyroid. PFAS and certain other EDCs are associated with altered thyroid hormone levels — the master dial for metabolism, energy and, in pregnancy, fetal brain development.
- Estrogen and testosterone balance. Because many of these chemicals imitate or block sex hormones, they’re linked to disrupted reproductive signalling in both women and men, including effects on sperm quality.
- Metabolism and weight. Some EDCs are nicknamed “obesogens” for their association with how the body stores fat and regulates blood sugar — a reminder that weight is not purely a matter of willpower.
- PCOS. A growing body of research connects bisphenols and related chemicals with polycystic ovary syndrome, one of the most common hormonal conditions in women.
- Fertility. The through-line from part one: EDCs are repeatedly linked to reduced fertility in both sexes, from egg and sperm quality to IVF outcomes.
- Earlier puberty. Researchers have long watched a trend toward earlier puberty, and hormonally active chemicals are among the suspected contributors — part of why children are considered especially vulnerable.
Not everyone carries the same risk. The windows that warrant the most care are pregnancy, infancy and childhood, when the body is actively using hormones as construction instructions and small disruptions can have outsized, lasting effects. If you’re pregnant or raising little ones, that’s where your attention (and your budget for swaps) is best spent — not on achieving an impossible chemical-free life.
The Part the Scary Posts Skip: Dose, and Nuance
If you’ve made it this far and feel a low hum of dread, let me hand you the other half of the truth. Detection is not the same as harm. Modern instruments can find a few molecules of almost anything; a chemical being present in your blood or your bottled water doesn’t automatically mean it’s doing damage at that level. The old toxicology line still holds a lot of weight: the dose makes the poison. (EDCs complicate it — timing and low-dose effects genuinely matter — but they don’t erase it.)
And some fears are simply overblown. The clearest example is soy. Yes, soy contains phytoestrogens — but they’re plant compounds hundreds of times weaker than your own estrogen. A large meta-analysis pooling 41 clinical studies found that neither soy nor its isoflavones meaningfully changed testosterone or estrogen levels in men. Much of the panic traces back to rodent or mega-dose studies that don’t reflect a normal human plate of edamame or tofu. For most people, whole soy foods are not only safe but linked to heart and metabolic benefits. It’s a useful reminder to aim our worry at the strong evidence, not the loudest headline.
How to Reduce Your Exposure — Without Losing Your Mind
Here’s the good news I kept coming back to: the biggest exposures are also the easiest to change. You don’t need to gut-renovate your life. You need a handful of swaps that quietly lower your everyday load — and then you get to stop thinking about it.
- Move to glass and stainless steel. For food storage and water especially. It’s the single highest-value habit, and glass containers you already own count.
- Never heat food in plastic. No microwaving in plastic tubs, no cling film touching hot food. Heat is what drives chemicals out of plastic and into your meal.
- Filter your tap water. A decent filter certified to reduce contaminants like lead and PFAS is one of the best-value purchases here.
- Cook on cast iron, stainless or good ceramic instead of scratched non-stick.
- Lean toward whole, less-packaged food. Every meal that starts as ingredients rather than a wrapper is a small win — and it’s the same advice that helps almost everything else.
- Cut back on canned and ultra-processed. Dried or frozen beans over canned; fresh over shelf-stable, when it’s realistic.
- Go fragrance-free where it’s easy. Unscented lotion, laundry and cleaning products sidestep a whole category of phthalates. “Fragrance” on a label is a mystery worth skipping.
- Spend your organic budget strategically. You don’t have to buy everything organic — prioritise the most heavily sprayed produce and, if it matters to you, hormone-free meat and dairy.
- Decline the receipt when you can, or let it go digital — and wash your hands before eating after handling one.
- Open a window and dust. Ordinary ventilation and damp-dusting genuinely lower the household reservoir, which matters most if there are small children around.
Perfection was never the assignment. A lighter load is.
You didn’t design this chemical landscape, and you can’t opt all the way out of it — nobody can, and chasing purity is its own kind of stress. But you can dial your exposure down, meaningfully, with a few unglamorous swaps you’ll barely notice once they’re habit. Hold both truths at once: something bigger than you is at work here, and your small daily choices still count. Change has always started exactly there.
